Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir has the strongest wood of all softwood species. It is used for solid timbers and lumber as well as in manufacturing of high end Glulam® beams globally. Due to its relatively large proportion of summer wood in the growth ring (yearly growth), the wood is strong, relatively hard and aesthetically pleasing. It is strong with distinct character.

Interior Douglas Fir is straight grained with tight growth rings and is resilient and moderately hard. By allowing the product to air dry, there is very little tendency to warp, crack or bend, and over time, it strengthens. The short growing season in the interior of British Columbia generates tight growth rings, between 10 to 25 growth rings per inch. Freshly cut lumber is relatively pale, but when it is exposed to natural light, it gains a copper-like patina colour.
